Mutant Name: eli1

Gene Name CesA3
Protein Name cellulose synthase
Mutagen EMS
Category forward genetics
Organism Arabidopsis thaliana
Ecotype Col
Donor
General Description 1.Mutants exhibited reduced growth, reduced cell expansion and extensive deposition of lignin in cell walls that do not normally lignify.
2.eli1 mutantation occurs in the cellulose synthase gene CESA3 and cause reduced cellulose synthesis.
3.mutations were caused by the substitution of serine by phenylalanine at position 301 in eli1-1, and alanine by valine at position 522 in eli1-2.
4.eli1-1 and eli1-2 are EMS mutagenized lines alleles. eli1-3 is the En transponson insertion line allele.
Organ Specificity abnormal lignification pattern was most intense in the root and also was observed in other tissues.
Impact on Wall 1.xylem cells were misshapen and failed to differentiate into continuous strands, causing a disorganized xylem.
2.Mutants exhibited an abnormal lignification, with a higher than normal staining of lignin in the xylem strands, and a patchy mosaic of intense lignin staining in nonvascular cells.
3.not only additional lignin but other cell wall components are deposited aberrantly in eli1 seedlings.
Impact on Sugar Composition cellulose level reduced by half.
