Mutant Name: irx5(irregular xylem5 )

Gene Name CesA4
Protein Name Cellulose synthase
Mutagen Transposon, EMS
Category forward genetics
Organism Arabidopsis thaliana
Ecotype Lb
Donor
General Description 1. The mutant has the same phenotype as irx1 and irx3. IRX5, IRX3, and IRX1 are all essential components of the cellulose synthesizing complex and the presence of all three subunits is required for the correct assembly of this complex.
2. irx5-1(transposon at L858), irx5-2(W995 to stop codon) and irx5-3(Q263 to stop codon) are all null alleles.
Organ Specificity
Impact on Wall The walls of the cells in the interfascicular region and xylem are thinner, and have an irregular, unevenly stained appearance.
Impact on Sugar Composition Cellulose content in the mutant is reduced to 30% of wild type levels.
