Mutant Name: kobito1-1

Gene Name KOB1
Protein Name elongation defective 1 protein
Mutagen T-DNA
Category forward genetics
Organism Arabidopsis thaliana
Ecotype Ws
Donor
General Description Mutant plants are a sterile and have a strong dwarf phenotype: inflorescence stems were short with small internodes, and floral organs presented a miniature morphology.
Organ Specificity 1. KOB1 mRNA was present in all organs investigated. Its levels were constitutive throughout seedling development both in the dark and in the light
2. GFP-KOB1 was observed at the cell surface of elongated epidermal or cortical cells. But in cells within the meristem and the root cap, GFP fluorescence accumulated in the cytoplasm and in distinct punctate patches.
3. KOB1 may function preferentially in rapidly elongating cells.
Impact on Wall Incomplete cell walls were visible in epidermal, cortical, and endodermal cell layers on transverse sections
Impact on Sugar Composition 1. A defect in the synthesis of cellulose(33% reduction) with accumulation of ectopic lignin and callose.
2. A relative increase in galacturonic acid suggested an increased pectin content enriched for homogalacturonan relative to rhamnogalacturonan.
