Mutant Name: rsw1-1

Gene Name CesA1
Protein Name cellulose synthase
Mutagen EMS
Category forward genetics
Organism Arabidopsis thaliana
Ecotype Col
Donor
General Description 1.Mutants identified by a radial swelling phenotype.
2. Val to Ala549 change after a C to T mutation.
3. rsw1 mutation disassembles cellulose synthase complexes.
Organ Specificity Mutants show radical swollen root tip at the restrictive temperature of 31 C.
Impact on Wall The rsw1 mutation disassembles cellulose synthase complexes, reduces cellulose accumulation, and causes beta-1,4-glucan to accumulate in a noncrystalline form.
Impact on Sugar Composition Shoots of rsw1 seedlings grown at the restrictive temperature (31 C) have less cellulose than wild-type seedlings(159 ± 19 versus 363 ± 28 nmol/mg of glucose of plant dry weight), but more of an ammonium oxalate-extracted glucan (195 versus 58 nmol/mg).
